Should I see a general dentist or orthodontist for a loose fixed retainer wire?

I have a fixed retainer (the wire behind my teeth) and half of it has come very loose (it is hanging). Should I book an appointment with a general dentist, or do I need to see an orthodontist for this?

  • Generally an orthodontist will fix the issue .
Eventually, a dentist can have a look in case you don’t have an immediate appointment with an orthodontist

  • It depends on your objective. If you just want the wire reattached, a general dentist may help. But if you also want to check whether the teeth have moved and understand why the retainer broke, it’s better to see an orthodontist.
