Persistent severe pain after a root canal can have many causes, some not related directly to the treated tooth. Since your pain is interfering with sleep, you should seek urgent dental or oral surgery evaluation, rather than waiting months for a routine specialist appointment.

An examination, possibly with imaging, is required to determine the exact cause and provide effective treatment. Mouthwash alone will not resolve this type of pain.

It depends on how the root canal treatment has been done and what stage of deterioration of the pulp of your tooth you were when the root canal treatment has been done. If there is a missing canal still inflated and untreated you might feel sensitivity to cold and hot,pain to the whole area of your face is pathoghomonic of this situation. If the pain is localised on the tooth itself it might be a fragilisation/fracture of the root walls or even a depassement of the root canal filling product to the periapical area which can be treated by a retrograd root canal surgical operation.
